UTV Trailer Size Guide: What Size Trailer Do I Need?

Choosing the right trailer for your UTV or side-by-side starts with more than just knowing the vehicle’s width. Overall length, height, weight, rear door opening, trailer payload, wheel box clearance, ramp capacity, and accessories all need to be considered before loading.

Valder’s Vehicles in Hinckley, Minnesota created this UTV trailer size guide to help owners of popular Polaris, Can-Am, Honda, Kawasaki, CFMOTO, John Deere, Kubota, Yamaha and other side-by-sides compare vehicle dimensions and determine what trailer size may work best.

Important: UTV specifications can vary by model year, trim level, tires, suspension, roof, windshield, mirrors, bumpers, winches, tracks and other accessories. The trailer sizes shown below are starting points only. Always measure your actual UTV and verify trailer dimensions, payload and ramp capacity before purchasing.

What Size Trailer Is Best for a UTV?

There is no single trailer size that fits every side-by-side. Compact UTVs may fit comfortably in a smaller trailer, while full-size crew models, cab-equipped utility vehicles and wide sport UTVs require considerably more room.

7′ × 12′ UTV Trailers

A 7′ × 12′ trailer may work for shorter two-seat and three-seat UTVs such as certain Polaris Ranger 500, Ranger SP 570 and similar compact side-by-sides.

Best for: Compact and midsize UTVs.

7′ × 14′ UTV Trailers

A 7′ × 14′ is a common starting point for many standard-cab utility and recreational UTVs including Ranger XP 1000, Pioneer, RZR, General and similar machines.

Best for: Many two-seat and three-seat full-size UTVs.

7′ × 16′ UTV Trailers

The extra floor length makes a 7′ × 16′ attractive for Crew, four-seat and longer recreational machines while providing additional room for gear.

Best for: Many Crew and four-seat UTVs.

7.5′ × 14′ UTV Trailers

The additional width can make loading easier for full-size UTVs around 64″ to 67″ wide and provides additional clearance around tires, fenders and accessories.

Best for: Wider utility UTVs and cab models.

7.5′ × 16′ & 7.5′ × 18′

These sizes provide additional width and floor length for Defender MAX, Ranger Crew, Commander MAX, RMAX4, Kubota and similar larger machines.

Best for: Full-size Crew UTVs and machines with accessories.

8.5′ Wide UTV Trailers

An 8.5′ wide trailer provides significantly more usable width and is often the better choice for extremely wide machines such as the Can-Am Maverick R or when extra cargo space is desired.

Best for: Wide sport UTVs, multiple machines and maximum loading room.

How to Measure Your UTV Before Buying a Trailer

Do not rely only on the dimensions listed in a brochure. Measure the machine exactly as it will be transported.

  1. Measure overall length. Measure from the furthest point at the front to the furthest point at the rear, including bumpers, winches, spare tires and accessories.
  2. Measure overall width. Measure the widest point of the tires, wheels, fender flares, mirrors or accessories.
  3. Measure overall height. Measure from the ground to the highest point of the roof, windshield, light bar or other permanently installed equipment.
  4. Determine loaded weight. Account for fuel, roof, windshield, winch, bumpers, spare tires, tracks and other equipment.

Trailer Measurements That Matter

The advertised width and length of a trailer do not tell the whole story. Before selecting an enclosed or utility trailer for your side-by-side, verify each of the following:

  • Usable interior floor length
  • Rear ramp door opening width
  • Rear ramp door opening height
  • Interior height
  • Distance between interior wheel boxes
  • Ramp door weight rating
  • Trailer GVWR
  • Trailer empty weight
  • Available payload capacity
  • Tie-down locations and ratings

UTV Weight vs. Trailer Payload

One of the most important numbers when selecting a UTV trailer is payload capacity, not simply axle size or GVWR.

Trailer payload is generally calculated by subtracting the trailer’s empty weight from its GVWR.

Example: If a trailer has a 7,000 lb GVWR and weighs 2,200 lbs empty, the theoretical payload is approximately 4,800 lbs before considering any manufacturer-specific limitations.

Your UTV’s published weight may also be lower than its actual loaded weight once fuel, windshield, roof, doors, winch, bumpers, spare tire, cargo and other accessories are installed.

Don’t Forget Rear Door Height

Height is one of the easiest measurements to overlook when shopping for an enclosed UTV trailer.

Many cab-equipped UTVs and side-by-sides with roofs measure approximately 78″ to more than 82″ tall. The trailer may have enough interior height while the rear ramp door opening is several inches shorter.

Always compare your UTV’s actual height to the trailer’s clear rear door opening height, not just the advertised interior height.

UTV Accessories Can Change Trailer Fitment

Factory and aftermarket equipment can significantly change the dimensions and weight of a side-by-side.

Common accessories that may affect trailer fit include:

  • Roofs
  • Windshields
  • Side mirrors
  • Cab enclosures
  • Winches
  • Front and rear bumpers
  • Spare tire carriers
  • Light bars
  • Oversized tires and wheels
  • Lift kits
  • Snow plows
  • Track systems

UTVs equipped with track systems deserve special attention because tracks can substantially increase overall width, length and weight.

Enclosed vs. Open Utility Trailer for a UTV

Enclosed UTV Trailers

An enclosed trailer protects your UTV from rain, snow, road salt, rocks and road debris while also providing secure storage for riding gear, tools, helmets and other equipment.

Enclosed trailers can also be customized with additional interior height, tie-down systems, cabinets, lighting, power packages, insulation and other options.

Open Utility Trailers

An open utility trailer is often lighter, easier to load and less expensive than an enclosed trailer. Utility trailers are a practical choice for UTV owners who do not require enclosed storage or weather protection.

What Size Trailer for a Polaris Ranger?

Many standard Polaris Ranger models are approximately 110″ to 120″ long and may work well with a 7′ × 12′ or 7′ × 14′ trailer depending on the specific model.

Longer Ranger Crew models can measure approximately 12′ to 13′ overall and typically benefit from a 7′ × 16′, 7.5′ × 16′ or larger trailer, especially when carrying additional gear.

What Size Trailer for a Can-Am Defender?

Standard Can-Am Defender models are approximately 65″ wide, making trailer width and wheel box clearance important considerations.

Long Defender MAX models can measure more than 13.5′ overall. A 7.5′ × 16′ or larger trailer is often a good starting point, but door opening, height and payload should always be verified.

What Size Trailer for a Four-Seat or Crew UTV?

Crew and four-seat UTVs are substantially longer than standard two-seat or three-seat machines. Popular Ranger Crew, Defender MAX, General XP 4, RZR XP 4, Commander MAX, UForce XL and similar machines commonly measure approximately 12′ to nearly 14′ long.

For these machines, 16′ and 18′ trailers provide more practical loading space and additional room for coolers, tools, spare tires, riding equipment and other cargo.

Should I Buy a Larger Trailer Than My UTV Requires?

In many cases, yes. A trailer that technically fits the UTV may leave very little room to walk around the machine, position tie-downs or carry additional equipment.

Choosing additional floor length can provide room for:

  • Fuel cans
  • Spare tires
  • Coolers
  • Helmets and riding gear
  • Tools
  • Camping equipment
  • Hunting equipment
  • Snowmobile or ATV gear
